A look at the numbers relating to turnover within the territory鈥檚 health system shows dozens of employees deciding to leave the field in the NWT. 

According to figures provided to 快盈v3 on Feb. 13 by the GNWT, the NWT Health and Social Services Authority hired 182 full-time employees in the 2023-24 fiscal year. In that same time frame, 163 employees exited full-time employment. 

The majority of those departures are people quitting. A total of 122 employees resigned in 2024. Adding to the number of exits were 15 workers who had their terms expire, 19 retirees and the remaining seven were denoted as 鈥渙ther鈥�. 

These numbers do not include physicians, according to Todd Sasaki, a communications manager with the Department of Finance. 快盈v3 has previously asked Health Minister Lesa Semmler for those statistics, but she said she did not know the answer. 

鈥淚 don鈥檛 have the specifics,鈥� she said on Feb. 4. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 monitor on a daily basis, I鈥檓 not updated because, in the North, we鈥檙e used to high turnovers in many of our areas, but I do know that we鈥檝e remained around 50 per cent staffing.鈥�

In general, resignations within the GNWT appear to be a growing trend over the past five years. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, 59 per cent of all exits were resignations. In the 2019-20 fiscal year, it was 51 per cent, according to the territory鈥檚 public service  

GNWT employees make up about a quarter of the territory鈥檚 workforce, at about 6,000 people, according to Budget 2025.
