A man and a youth are facing charges following a Fort Resolution RCMP investigation into gunshots fired during the night.

Police say the crime reduction unit was called to a Fort Resolution home on April 26, shortly after 10 p.m.

Initially, the RCMP say they were unable to confirm the allegations of someone shooting off a firearm. However, after visiting the residence and speaking with the occupant, they were called 10 minutes later about two males leaving the home.

RCMP say both individuals fled when officers identified them. They were apprehended and taken into custody. In conjunction with the arrest, police say they seized a loaded handgun and $955 in cash, as well as drug paraphernalia.

A 16-year-old youth from Saskatoon, Sask., who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, possession of a weapon contrary to a legal order, carrying a concealed weapon, careless use of a firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized, possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000, uttering threat to property and/or animals, failure to comply with a probation order and resisting a peace officer.

Yohannes Tekle, 21, of Edmonton, is charged with resisting a peace officer and uttering threats to property and/or animals.

Both of the accused remain in custody pending a future court date.

"The NT RCMP developed and implemented a Divisional Drug Strategy in 2023 and has since strengthened its capacity to tackle illicit drug trade in the Northwest Territories through specialized programs, such as the Territorial Crime Reduction Unit, with support from the Government of the Northwest Territories," said RCMP media relations officer Julie Plourde. "This investigation is one of many examples of the positive impact of these specialized programs have had on combating illicit drug trafficking in the territory."

Anyone who has information about this incident or any other illegal activity is asked to contact the Fort Resolution RCMP at 394-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.nwtnu.crimestoppersweb.com.
