An 'out of this world' winter concert at N.J. Macpherson School

Students and staff perform Spaced Out: A Musical Odyssey

Yellowknife is known for its nighttime display of the spellbinding aurora, but students of N.J. Macpherson School recently decided to go above and beyond that phenomenon for their annual winter concert 鈥楽paced Out: A Musical Odyssey鈥.

Sarah Power, the music and art teacher at the school, said it was a 鈥渕agical鈥 night as the stage was transformed into a galaxy of wonder, including the planets of the solar system and themed skits, songs, poems and dance - including a 鈥楽tar Wars Techno鈥 skit performed by school principal, Randy Caines.

鈥淲e also had this year a fiddle club - there were 14 fiddlers there, fiddling to Tlicho Elder Rosa Wah-Shee reading her poem, Ode to the 快盈v3 Lights,鈥 Power said.

The evening began with the choir singing an Earth song, Earthlings Unite, to symbolize nature, and then the space odyssey began with the journey into outer space, eventually ending with the return to Earth, Power said.

Many hands

The event was made even more special because of the work done by parents, students and staff, she added.

鈥淪o it was really quite special that everyone had a hand in it, and everyone helped.鈥

The audience was very impressed with the performance, Power said.

鈥淭hey thought it was very magical and very majestic. And, you know, I think a lot of the parents and even the students said, 鈥楬ey, it feels like we travelled through the universe of imagination,鈥欌 she said, adding that it was important they include Pluto in the stellar display, although it is no longer considered the ninth planet of the solar system.
