We鈥檝e all read about the success of the Yellowknife Wolverines in Blackfalds, Alta., earlier this month. They became the first team from the NWT to win a provincial championship of any sort since the Yellowknife Junior Merchants in 2006.

The 2023 North American Indigenous Games are winding down in Halifax and that means Team NT is going through its final paces.

Perhaps no other major multi-sport event went through the stops and starts that the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) has been through.

Before we begin, a side note: remember how I wrote that no one could remember the last time a team from Yellowknife had won a provincial softball championship in Alberta? Well, someone did answer that question. A very reliable source has confirmed 鈥� with photographic evidence 鈥� that the Yellowknife Junior Merchants won gold in the 2006 U17 boys provincial B tournament that year. Mystery solved and I鈥檓 removing my calf from my throat.

The results may still be unofficial, but Hay River is the most active community in the NWT, according to the ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

For the first time since anyone can remember when, a team from the NWT has gone to Alberta and won a provincial title in softball.

It鈥檚 been a while since Yellowknife has sent a girls softball team to play in a provincial championship in Alberta.
