Rebecca Alty is poised to become the NWT鈥檚 next MP.
She succeeds the territory鈥檚 former MP Michael McLeod, also a Liberal, who had been a Member of Parliament since 2015. As of 9:30 p.m. Monday evening, Alty was out in front with 2,218 votes. Kimberly Fairman of the Conservatives was in second with 1,497, while Kelvin Kotchilea of the NDP was in third with 571 votes. Raibow Eyes of the Green Party was fourth with 51.
"It was a great campaign," said Alty. "Looking forward to going to Ottawa soon."
Alty is a born-and-raised Yellowknifer and is not exactly a stranger to politics, having served as Yellowknife's mayor since 2018. She took a leave of absence from the role to run for the Liberals in the federal election.
Alty had some other notable politicians in attendance too, including city councillors Garrett Cochrane and Stacie Arden-Smith. Range Lake MLA Kieron Testart was also there, as was Dettah Chief Ernest Betsina.
Of note, both Testart and Cochrane are registered members of the Liberal Party.
Also notably McLeod was not in attendance. Alty said that he was at home in Fort Providence.
She did say, however, that she spoke with McLeod on Monday morning.
"He was supportive, gave me advice on X, Y and Z, so really appreciate his years of experience," said Alty.
Talking shop about her election strategy, Alty added she spent as much time visiting communities as she could. Out of a possible 33, she said she visited 20 of them.
"Between getting out to the communities and having so many volunteers to help knock on doors, that was some of the keys to success," said Alty.

Ben Hendriksen, the city's acting mayor, has held the position since Alty took leave. Now that it鈥檚 confirmed she most likely won鈥檛 be returning to city council, it鈥檚 up to council to decide how to move forward.
As for the two who showed up, neither of them were surprised by the results.
"It was pretty clear from what we were seeing at at the doors that Rebecca was going to take this," said Cochrane.
Arden-Smith said she wasn't shocked finding out Alty was running. There also weren't any doubts about her.
"I think a lot of 快盈v3ers elect people based on who they are and what they represent," she said. "Rebecca is known across the territory, she makes efforts to go in in every community, even on her own. She's put in the time and the effort. She's well-deserving of this role."
The Liberals and leader Mark Carney are projected to form at least a minority government.
