How to get started on your physical literacy journey

We now know what physical literacy is all about: finding comfort in being active. We鈥檝e explored fun activities to enjoy during the winter months, holiday times, and yes, those lively family dance-offs.

We now know what physical literacy is all about: finding comfort in being active.

We鈥檝e explored fun activities to enjoy during the winter months, holiday times, and yes, those lively family dance-offs. We鈥檝e also been inspired by the amazing initiatives happening in the Northwest Territories, encouraging us to get out there and 鈥淲alk to Tuk.鈥 Counting our steps, improving our photography skills, and winning prizes are all part of the journey!

But let鈥檚 talk about the starting point. What do I do first? It鈥檚 easy to get caught up in the idea that we need everything in place before we can begin. We might think, 鈥淚 need to wait until I have the right gear or the perfect plan.鈥 While it鈥檚 true that preparation is important, what鈥檚 even more crucial is simply getting started. You know, like start now, whatever that may be: trying out a new sport, taking a morning walk, or even moving around during those home office days. It鈥檚 all about taking those small steps toward being more active.

If you鈥檙e reading this, let鈥檚 embark on this journey together. I promise to commit to my goal of 5,000 steps per day, embracing those frosty mornings that greet me as I start my day. I encourage you to join me and share your progress through your 鈥淲alk to Tuk鈥 team with the NWT Recreation & Parks Association.

Now, let鈥檚 take it a step further. What activities do you truly enjoy? What do you love watching on TV or streaming online? Of course it鈥檚 table tennis, but what else piques your interest? If you鈥檝e ever wanted to learn archery, visit physicalliteracy.info, click on the 'Sports' section, look for Archery NT and find out where the next clinic might be. Reach out to them and see if there鈥檚 someone in your community who can help get things started.

Are you interested in cross-country skiing? Again, head to the website and connect with the territorial sport organization to find out where you can get skis and how to get involved. Remember, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

If your favourite winter activity is snowball fights, you might not find a territorial sport organization for that, but don鈥檛 worry. Reach out to your community recreation coordinator (you can find them on physicalliteracy.info under the 'Community' tab) or check out the Mackenzie Recreation Association under 'Sports' to see if they can help you organize some fun.

As I mentioned, it only takes a millisecond to get started. If you鈥檙e thinking about an activity, chances are someone else is too. Find a buddy to join you, having a second person can make all the difference in making the experience enjoyable and successful. There are so many people out there ready to help and support you on this journey. And, did I tell you, you are awesome!

I look forward to hearing your stories and seeing your images through the 鈥淲alk to Tuk鈥 initiative. Don鈥檛 forget to tag #physicalliteracynwt and #weareallteamnt in your social media posts, as you embrace physical activity and become part of the Team NT family.

Thorsten Gohl is the co-ordinator of Physical LIteracy NWT.
